The winter season can be harsh on your skin. The cold weather, wind, and low humidity can all contribute to dry, irritated skin. But there are some simple things you can do to help keep your skin healthy and hydrated all winter long.

Moisturize regularly

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! This is probably the most important thing you can do for your skin in winter. Choose a good quality lotion or cream and apply it generously all over your body after showering or bathing.
 

Pay special attention to areas that tend to get particularly dry, like your hands, feet, elbows and knees. A good moisturizer will help protect your skin from the elements and prevent it from becoming too dry.


Be sure to choose a moisturizer that’s right for your skin type – if you have oily skin, look for a light, oil-free moisturizer; if you have dry skin, opt for a heavier cream or ointment. 

Protect your hands and feet

The hands and feet are particularly susceptible to dryness in the winter because they have less oil glands than other parts of the body.Protect your skin from the elements by covering up when you go outside. Wear gloves to avoid contact with harsh chemicals or windburned skin, and scarf or turtleneck sweater to protect your face and neck from chapping.

Stick to lukewarm water instead, and don’t stay in the shower or tub for too long – 10 minutes is usually enough time to get clean without drying out your skin. Take shorter showers/baths and use cooler water. Hot water strips away natural oils from your skin, so take lukewarm showers instead. When washing your face, avoid using hot water — opt for cool or tepid water instead.

Drinking eight glasses of water a day will help keep your skin cells plump and prevent them from drying out. Omega-3 fatty acids are also great for maintaining healthy skin, so be sure to include salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds, or other sources of these nutrients in your diet.
